Top Gun 2 director Joseph Kosinski says his upcoming Brad Pitt racing movie will feature Maverick-level action. Tom Cruise’s long-awaited return as Maverick has proven to be an unexpected and industry-reviving triumph at the box office. This week the blockbuster indeed became Cruise’s biggest movie ever as it soared past $800 million in worldwide grosses.
The appeal of Cruise as a movie star of course is one reason Top Gun: Maverick has been such a massive hit. But certainly another big reason is the movie’s action, as captured by director Kosinski and his crew. Rather than employ the same kind of CGI seen in most modern-day blockbusters, Kosinski and Cruise elected to go truly old school on Maverick, doing as much as possible with real actors flying in real planes. Obviously this approach made life a lot more difficult, particularly for the actors, who had to endure massive G forces and even jet fuel in their blood in order to make the movie come to life. Audiences certainly appreciated all that hard effort, as those stratospheric Top Gun: Maverick box office numbers clearly indicate.
Indeed it absolutely is not lost on Top Gun 2 director Kosinski that the audience has fully embraced the Maverick approach to making action look and feel as real as possible. And the director promises his next movie, the Pitt-starring racing film currently titled Formula One, will employ a similar in-camera approach to creating thrills. Kosinski told The Wrap (via Deadline):
“Certainly seeing people react to an in-camera, authentically captured film like Top Gun makes us all feel good that our approach works and is appreciated by audiences. It’s almost funny to me to see people who are so enamored with real photography. Younger people almost haven’t seen a lot of it. They’re so used to CGI [computer-generated images] being a tool of big movies that when you shoot something for real, it feels innovative. That’s exactly the approach for Formula One … to shoot at the real races and real cars and capture it. It’s going to be a huge challenge but an exciting one for me.”
Not much has been revealed about the upcoming Formula One beyond Pitt’s involvement and the participation of real-life F1 champion Lewis Hamilton. The story from writer Ehren Kruger has been lightly teased however, as the film reportedly sees Pitt playing a retired racer who re-emerges to mentor a younger driver. This indeed sounds not that far off the plot of Top Gun: Maverick, which sees Cruise’s Pete Mitchell still indulging his need for speed while acting as a mentor to a group of young aviators.
Indeed the team behind Formula One could do a lot worse than emulate the approach Top Gun: Maverick took to making the audience really feel the speed of flying along with Cruise and company inside soaring fighter jets. And Kosinski would seem to be uniquely equipped to make a similar experience come to life on Formula One, given his work on Maverick. Unfortunately it seems that Formula One will not emulate Top Gun 2 in being a true big-screen experience, as the project has reportedly sold to Apple TV+. But even at a reduced scale, Formula One can still provide a lot of Maverick-like thrills using real cameras attached to real race cars, with a real movie star in Pitt behind the wheel.
