One fan's concept art is already imagining what the upcoming Salem's Lot reboot will look like. Based on the 1975 Stephen King novel of the same name, the film follows Ben Mears, a writer who returns to his hometown of Jerusalem's Lot, only to gradually discover that residents are turning into vampires. Multiple television adaptations of King's book have been made over the years, though they have varied in their reception and interpretation of the source material. The most recent use of the fictional town came in 2018, when it was incorporated into the second season of Hulu's Castle Rock.
The development of a Salem's Lot movie began back in 2019 and, following its official announcement, it was revealed that Gary Dauberman would write and direct the project with acclaimed horror filmmaker James Wan stepping in to produce. Dauberman, who has worked with Wan in the past, writing and/or directing films such as The Nun and Annabelle Comes Home, has also previously adapted the screenplay for Stephen King's It in 2017. With production underway, Salem's Lot is set to be released on September 9, 2022, and will feature a cast that includes Lewis Pullman, Makenzie Leigh, Bill Camp, Spencer Treat Clark, Alfre Woodard, and William Sadler.
Now, a fan and movie poster designer with the username creepyduckdesign has created concept art for the upcoming Salem's Lot film. Shared on Instagram, the image includes a burning skull, featuring noticeable fangs, with a caption that reads "Burn baby burn!" While visually unique, fans of the source material could also look at it as a reference to King's novel, in which Ben attempts to destroy the town and its vampires by starting a fire. Fans of King's novels and the numerous adaptations made over the years have been looking forward to a Salem's Lot film for some time now. As anticipation begins to mount, Warner Bros. is building to its release with the reveal of the movie's first official footage at this year's CinemaCon. The description of its first look paints the reboot as having an eerie tone and setting, and gives fans an idea of what to expect from its vampires, noting that they look "very pale and have weird glowing eyes."
While the plot will likely follow that of the original novel, there are still a lot of details surrounding the upcoming Salem's Lot reboot that remain under wraps. Working off of source material that has been noted as a favorite of both Stephen King and his fans, it will be interesting to see not only how the film honors the book, but how it differs from the interpretations of previous adaptations.
