DC's Legends of Tomorrow is quite a unique entry in the pantheon of shows set within the Arrowverse and fans are still crushed by its cancellation. Unlike the morally just heroes in its contemporaries, the superhero comedy/drama series deals with a group of superpowered individuals who have their own inner demons to fight. Dealing with heroes and anti-heroes at the core, each season witnesses major developments for the lead characters.
In some cases, the character arc might involve a hero gaining more emotional maturity as was the case with Atom or Heatwave. On the other hand, some of the characters get a whole new life altogether as can be seen from the experiences of Gideon and Astra Logue.
For starters, it was the time-traveler Rip Hunter who brought the team together in the first place. Serving as a formidable match to Vandal Savage, it's Rip's determination and optimism that he gathers the bunch of misfit metahumans who unwillingly unite for a common battle. His willingness to unite heroes, as well as villains, reveal his anti-heroic nature.
In the sophomore season, he gets brainwashed to join the DC villain team Legion of Doom but then his redemption arc is complete in the third season when he sacrifices himself. To gain more perspective into his morally grey areas, the debut season serves as a good introduction to the character.
Ray Palmer's cheery attitude has been shown before when the character debuted in Arrow. But in Legends, he gets to show his mature side. Just take for instance the Season 2 episode "Shogun" in which he is willing to let Nate destroy his Atom exoskeleton to defeat an enemy from the Tokugawa shogunate.
Further on, he often comes to the aid of his teammates such as the time when he joined forces with Martin to remove a virus from Mick Rory's body. In fact, Mick is so grateful that he is willing to give Leonard Snart's Cold Gun to Palmer. This season also allowed him to be at the center of many historical moments. He enters the Apollo 11 control module during one mission and even convinces a distraught George Lucas to continue his filmmaking career resulting in the Star Wars movies.
One of the main characters on Legends of Tomorrow, Sara Lance has moments to shine in every season of the show. But it is in season 3 that her morals are tested. She has a lot of personal vendettas to deal with Damien Dahrk, the same villain that killed off her sister in Arrow.
After multiple episodes involving mind-control under the demon Mallus and Sara falling into a coma, it is Sara who ends up saving Dahrk's daughter. With Mallus tormenting Nora Dahrk, Sara decides to risk it all and enter the demonic realm yet again. While Sara might appear cold-hearted on the surface, she proves her selflessness in this season. Even on the romantic front, her turbulent relationship with Ava reveals the challenges that the team members face in leading average lives.
In the past seasons, Matt Ryan's Arrowverse version of the demonologist John Constantine appeared as a recurring character. In season 4, he gets more personal arcs allowing him to be promoted as a main cast member. And this indeed is the perfect season to take a deep dive into Constantine's past and present. While he is quick to crack a sarcastic remark every now and then, Constantine has his moments of annoyance when he is out there saving his fellow team members from situations as random as "hallucinations from a unicorn's magical goo."
Time travel allows Constantine to aid those wronged in the Salem Witch Trials as well as personalities like Ernest Hemingway with whom he fights off a Minotaur. The most important aspect of Constantine's arc in this season is his relationship with Desmond, a former lover who once made a deal with the demon Neron who continues to torment Constantine over the years.
Mick Rory aka Heatwave is easily one of the funniest characters on Legends of Tomorrow, sharing a love-hate relationship with several of his teammates on the Waverider. However, in Season 5, viewers see him as a father for the first time and this yields some truly wholesome moments. It all starts when one of the team's accidental timelines resets and reunites him with his high-school girlfriend.
Further, in the future, he discovers that he has fathered a girl called Lita for whom he wishes to be a better person. While initially, he doesn't believe in himself to be a responsible parent, he does try his best eventually. Scenes like Mick and Lita riding the Waverider together and Lita libeling his books add more depth to Mick's character. Talking about books, this season is also significant as Mick ends his writing career and passes on the pseudonym of "Rebecca Silver" to Mona-Wu.
Accidentally sent to hell by John Constantine in her childhood, Astra Logue was introduced as a soul-dealer in Season 5 of Legends of Tomorrow. But it is in the next season when audiences get a real taste of her magical prowess as she picks up new skills from Aleister Crowley.
When Crowley ends up betraying her and sends her teammates into an animated realm, Astra unleashes a spell that she picked up from her mother. This incantation turns out to be so powerful that not only does Crowley lose his magical abilities but everyone else in the vicinity like Constantine. Astra decides to start over with the latter and teaches the master of dark arts the skills to get back to his normal state.
Gideon, the artificial consciousness system of the Waverider, has been a constant part of the show right from the start. However, she finally gets a human form in the latest season, allowing her to pursue more human choices such as learning how to talk and pursuing a romantic relationship with Gary Green.
With her being more involved with the team, she is way more than just a tech system now. Her naivety with the outside world and the way she adjusts to her new avatar make for a satisfying storyline. Gideon's conflict between accepting Rip Hunter's commands and exercising her own free will adds an interesting duality to her personality which is fleshed out well this season.
