Of all the ways to tick off Harley Quinn, there's one pet peeve of hers that's guaranteed to get anyone on her bad side. Jimmy Olsen found out the hard way when he crossed paths with Quinn during her brief stay in Metropolis.
Since she joined the DC Universe as the Joker's sidekick, Harley's never exactly been squeamish when it comes to the act of killing. Whether it's with her oversized popgun or her humongous mallet, Quinn has shown not just a comfortableness with murder, but a proficiency at it. However, recent years have seen her calm down. As an antihero, Harley Quinn is still quite the combatant and can take down people several times her size. But without the Joker's influence, it seems that Harley just doesn't have the killer instinct she had when she was by her former puddin's side. That being said, even when she wasn't with the Joker during one of their many breakups, Harley revealed a trigger that can bring out the worst in her.
In the "Bright Lights, Big City" arc of Harley Quinn, Harley and her closest ally, Poison Ivy, head to Metropolis for a change of scenery and the chance for Harley to torment Superman’s pal, Jimmy Olsen. Jimmy had lied to Harley about being in love with Talia al Ghul, causing Quinn to seek revenge on the Daily Planet's expert photographer. She even manages to worm her way into the newspaper offices by posing as a romance columnist named" Holly Chance", just for the chance to get her payback. In Harley Quinn #19 by Karl Kessel and Terry Dodson, Harley's time in Metropolis comes to an end and Jimmy asks what he did to deserve her wrath. According to Harley, lying about love is simply unforgivable.
And yes, she does attempt to kill the photographer, but Superman saves Jimmy Olsen like always. But the entire misadventure in Metropolis provides an insightful look into Harley Quinn. After all, Harley spent years in a horrible relationship with the Joker and she seemed to be rejuvenated when she got together with Poison Ivy. It appears that more than anything else, love is the force that drives Harley at nearly everything she does.
Every hero or villain has some sort of value that drives them. Batman is built on vengeance, Superman promotes hope and even the Joker appreciates humor down to his core. It makes sense that romance is what motivates Harley. Whether it’s Joker or Poison Ivy, Harley Quinn simply loves love and holds it up as something to be cherished, not manipulated or used for anyone's benefit. At the end of the day, Harley doesn't just want to give and receive love, she wants others to regard it as precious as she does. It really fits Harley Quinn's character that she would be willing to gravely injure or kill someone who tries to pervert the value she holds so dearly.
