Though there's no E3 presentation again this year, showcases like Xbox + Bethesda, PlayStation State of Play, and even Netflix's second Geeked Week have helped fill the void in the gaming space. While the former shows were expectedly dedicated to the medium, Geeked Week did provide some particularly exciting updates on video game adaptations.
Fans on Reddit commented on their favorite announcements, with Netflix's animated offerings garnering the most enthusiasm. Given the successes of the likes of Castlevania, Arcane, DOTA: Dragon's Blood, and more, Netflix has made the case for gaming adaptations thriving best in animation.
Even if IP owner and publisher Konami has neglected its beloved franchise, Castlevania has recently enjoyed emphatic success on Netflix. Powerhouse Animation Studios have given an inventive spin on this rich dark-fantasy world that's simultaneously faithful to the essence of video games. After season 4 of the original series wrapped last year, an announcement followed that Castlevania: Nocturne would be its sequel following the exploits of Richter Belmont against the backdrop of the French Revolution.
In terms of animation, it was arguably among the biggest reveals from Netflix Geeked Week's TV front, providing a sneak peek at the new protagonist. Redditor dagreenman18 was thrilled over Richter's inspired design, exclaiming "Let's goooooo! [Rondo of Blood] and [Symphony of the Night] make perfect sense. Gives enough of a time gap after Trevor and can let them make some adjustments if necessary."
Following the success of Castlevania, Netflix has been greenlighting more anime-inspired series based on popular video game IPs. Valve's DOTA: Dragon's Blood is one of them, and though its successes have been more moderate by comparison, it's been overall positive nonetheless.
Surprisingly, not only did Netflix Geeked Week reveal the greenlit third season, but it also announced an August 11th premiere date despite season 2 having just been released in January. Fans have been feeling mixed emotions, as the pacing has been moving too quickly, but Redditors like eXePyrowolf still expressed excitement over the quick release, saying "Wow not even a teaser, just two images. Well, I'll take the release date, that's not too far off!"
During the golden age of gaming developer BioWare, the Dragon Age series made up some of the team's best games. And to further cement Netflix's insisting on animated gaming adaptations, Geeked Week gave a surprise reveal of Dragon Age: Absolution coming this December and animated by one of the studios behind The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf.
There's admittedly some apprehension here as well given the general art direction of the studio involved, but there are still fans optimistic over what this world can lend to TV animation. Redditor yogiho2 said "Looks great. If any universe [deserves an] animated series it's Dragon Age." Dragon Age is known for its engrossing blend of high and dark fantasy across its sprawling world, as well as having varied casts of characters with branching story arcs.
CD Projekt Red's Cyberpunk 2077 may have been one of the most disastrous video game launches in recent memory, and despite it taking the better part of a year and a half to rectify it, it's since developed into a stable and solid RPG experience. Aside from the video game space, though, the publisher/developer is looking to expand this new IP into a TV anime in the form of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners with the help of Studio Trigger.
The anime studio has a good reputation among fans, with Redditor docarwell affectionately saying "Love me some TRIGGER. So much style and it's always fun, even if it devolves into a stupid mess (in space)." Considering Trigger's work on the likes of Kill la Kill and Promare, fans will be hoping Cyberpunk: Edgerunners doesn't turn out to be a cheap marketing attempt.
Fighting game franchise adaptations have been known for being notoriously bad in most cases (partly due to live-action projects), but an anime seems right at home for something like Tekken. As with most fighting game series, Tekken is defined by over-the-top action and bombast coupled with melodramatic characters and stories. That being said, those are some of the pieces that make the Tekken series some of the best fighting games around.
Geeked Week still didn't give a release date for Tekken: Bloodline, but game producer Katsuhiro Harada did appear to present some exclusive clips. Redditor SnooDogs7868 was pleased with where the IP is going in general, saying "Tekken needs more content across the board. Namco should look at how Warner Brothers and DC capitalize [on] the various adaptations of Batman. Tekken should be in every flavor for every age group. This is a step in the right direction."
Studio MDHR's Cuphead effortlessly became an indie sensation when it launched in 2017, and it looks like 2022 will see the franchise blossom further. The highly-anticipated DLC expansion The Delicious Last Course is finally set for a June 30th release date, and Netflix's The Cuphead Show! was revealed to get a second season coming on August 19th. Similar to DOTA: Dragon's Blood, it was surprising to see season 2 get such a quick release date, as the show premiered its first season this past February.
The game was acclaimed for its addictive brand of run-and-gun gameplay meshed with a '20s-era cartoon aesthetic, as well as its clever dose of humor. The Cuphead Show! season 1 earned a moderately positive reception, with fans like Redditor TheBigIdiotSalami saying "I guess I'll be the one excited about this. I thought this s*** was a f***** riot," and Investing_G saying "Did not expect this show to be so trippy. Excited for this."
