The Ghostbusters: Afterlife sequel movie is coming sooner than expected as Sony has revealed its release date. The most recent installment in the supernatural comedy franchise saw Jason Reitman take the reins from his father, director/producer Ivan Reitman, as he co-wrote the script with City of Ember's Gil Kenan and directed. Ghostbusters: Afterlife introduced the descendants of Harold Ramis' Egon Spengler as they faced a major supernatural threat with ties to the Manhattan Crossrip from the original film.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife introduced a number of stars to the franchise, namely Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, Mckenna Grace, Paul Rudd, Celeste O'Connor and Logan Kim while also featuring the returns of Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Annie Potts and Sigourney Weaver reprising their original roles. Following multiple COVID-related delays, the film hit theaters in November 2021 to mixed-to-positive reviews from critics, but was a solid box office performer, grossing over $204 million against its $75 million production budget. Thanks to this success, Sony has gotten to work on multiple new films in the franchise, including Ghostbusters: Afterlife sequel, and one appears to be further along in development than previously expected.

Just a couple months after its was first confirmed to be in the works, Sony has set an official release date for the Ghostbusters: Afterlife sequel movie. The studio has confirmed that the new film will be hitting theaters on December 20, 2023, moving from its original planned summer release. This will put the Ghostbusters: Afterlife sequel movie's release just over two years after its predecessor.

Prior to the release of the film, both Aykroyd and Jason Reitman expressed their interests in producing a sequel to Ghostbusters: Afterlife, with the former hoping to have the surviving original cast return for multiple sequels while the latter was interested in continuing the story of its new, younger cast. Reitman subsequently confirmed at the recent Ghostbusters Day that he would be returning with Gil Kenan for the Ghostbusters: Afterlife sequel, with the codename being "Firehouse" and would return the events of the story to New York City and the iconic base of the original Ghostbusters. Reitman also confirmed that the film would be the "next chapter in the Spengler family story," indicating plans to bring back Mckenna Grace's Phoebe and Finn Wolfhard's Trevor at the very least.

News of the Ghostbusters: Afterlife sequel movie's release date being in December 2023 seemingly indicates development progressing quickly on the next franchise installment, likely a welcome announcement for fans of the recent movie, which scored an impressive 94 percent approval rating from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. The sequel isn't the only new project in the works for the franchise at Sony as both an animated film and animated Ghostbusters TV series at Netflix are in the works. While audiences await further details on the sequel, they can catch up with Ghostbusters: Afterlife now streaming on Starz.
