Minions: Rise of Gru is the anticipated sequel to the beloved Minions movie that is coming to cinemas on July 1st. The movie marks the return of Steve Carrell as Gru, this time an adolescent aspiring villain who recruits the Minions for the first time. Also appearing in the movie is Taraji P. Henson, who voices the main antagonist of the film, Belle Bottom.

From The Rough is a true story based on athletics coach Catana Starks. The film follows Catana as she becomes the first Black woman to coach an all-male golf team, and how she deals with the misfit players (including Tom Felton in a non-Harry Potter movie role) as they try to compete in the championship season.
Here, Henson takes on the leading role, and her performance portraying a strong woman battling against the odds is superb. She captures Starks’ determination well, while also keeping her inner demons real and believable. Henson brings a uniqueness to the character and it portrays well on the screen.
Four Brothers is a crime/action film that also stars Mark Wahlberg and Tyrese Gibson, alongside Henson. The film is about four brothers who band together to search and hunt down a dangerous gang member, Victor Sweet, as they believe he’s the man responsible for killing their adoptive mother.
Due to Four Brothers being early on in her film career, Henson has a smaller role. She plays Camille Mercer, who is the wife of one of the brothers. Camille is likable due to her dedication and love as a mother. She also brings care to her character and helps where she can.
Disney's Ralph Breaks the Internet is the sequel movie to Wreck-It Ralph. It follows video game characters Ralph and Vanellope, who adventure out into the unknown world of the internet. As they find themselves in trouble and search through the web for help, Ralph and Vanellope try to figure out what they really want to do with their game lives.
Henson provides the voice to the algorithmic Yesss, an extravagant and likable character in the Wreck-It Ralph movies that helps Ralph with his viral meme fame. She brings a lot of energy to her character, and has unique humor in her character that works well with her role. While her appearance is short, Yesss is surely memorable.
Hustle & Flow is an American drama that is loosely based on the director Craig Brewer’s life. When DJay (played by Terrence Howard in one of his best movies) is tired of living his life as a pimp, he decides to follow his dreams of something more. He starts on his quest to gain the attention of a rapper and make it into the music industry.
In Hustle & Flow, Henson plays Shug, a sex worker who falls pregnant with DJay's child. She brings a powerful and emotional performance as her character develops throughout the film. Henson has a grittiness to her performance that makes it believable and depicts her in a sympathetic light, not to mention the chemistry between her and her co-star.
Talk To Me is a biographical movie about the true story of Ralph Waldo Greene, also known as Petey. It follows Petey, an ex-con who makes his way to being a Washington radio host. As his career grew on the radio, he used his platform to become an activist in the 1960s.
Petey's love interest is Vernell Watson, played by Henson, who was an ideal choice for the part. She brings both charismatic humor and sensuality to Watson’s character, putting her heart and soul into playing Watson. Henson really gave Watson a free and colorful personality and made her a truly memorable character.
The Best of Enemies is another movie in Henson's filmography that is based on the story of a true event, which follows a black civil rights activist and a local KKK leader. When the two end up co-chairing a community summit, they develop an unlikely relationship that changes history.

The activist is Ann Atwater, whom Henson depicts in this movie, and she brings the strong character to life with ease. Henson keeps the audience engaged with her performance and shows both the struggles and care for people that Ann feels. In one of the best period dramas of the 2000s, Benjamin Button (Brad Pitt) is found by Daisy, who discovers Benjamin has a rare illness that causes Benjamin to age backward. The story follows as they keep in touch, with Daisy getting older and Benjamin getting younger.
Benjamin’s mother is Queenie, who is played by Henson. She ages from 26 to 71 within the film's timeline, showing her range as an actress. Within a powerful premise, Henson gives an emotional performance in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and she stands out from other characters for her loving nature.
Hidden Figures follows the true stories of three black women working as mathematicians during the Space Race. Together, they work their way through the ranks to help John Glenn get into space, and all the while they face discrimination and difficulties thrown their way.
Taraji P. Henson plays the main role of Katherine Johnson. She balances her character's strengths and doubts well. Her pivotal scene in the movie delivers a strong and unforgettable performance, with emotion and heart. She manages to show the many dimensions of Katherine with her home life, love life, and work.
